The RI Community Food Bank distributes millions of pounds of food to people in need through a state-wide network of 147 member agencies, providing nutritious pantry staples, fresh produce, meats, dairy and culturally relevant foods to Rhode Islanders experiencing food insecurity. Equipped with a 77,000-square-foot facility, a fleet of trucks and a professional staff, the Food Bank safely and efficiently solicits, collects, stores and distributes large quantities of food from many sources.

About the Role

The Director of Human Resources will oversee talent management, administration of the HRIS, including payroll, compensation and benefits, performance management, employee relations, and leadership and staff professional development. The Director of HR will also be instrumental in shaping and driving a high-performance culture by enhancing the RICFB’s commitment to its employees and strengthening its position as an employer of choice.

How You’ll Make an Impact

Strategic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement HR strategies to support the RICFB’s strategic goals and objectives and elevate the RICFB as an employer of choice.

Talent Management:

  • Oversee recruitment and selection to identify top candidates and establish a comprehensive onboarding program for new hires. Develop and implement career planning, succession planning, and leadership development programs while managing change processes to ensure smooth transitions and minimal disruption.

HRIS & Payroll Administration:

  • Oversee the HRIS system and develop key HR metrics, dashboards, and technology strategies to streamline HR processes and enhance decision-making. Supervise the payroll function, ensuring compliance with laws, tax obligations, and efficient transactions for HR, managers, and employees.

Compensation Programs:

  • Oversee the annual review and benchmarking of the compensation programs including ensuring that compensation practices follow all labor laws and support the company’s strategic goals. Manage and communicate compensation program guidelines and information.

Benefit Programs:

  • Research, benchmark, and recommend health and welfare benefit programs, negotiating with brokers to ensure cost-effective, high-quality offerings and oversee open enrollment. Administer the 401(k) Plan and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations in collaboration with the CFO, board, and external advisors.

Performance Management and Employee Relations:

  • Modernize and enhance the existing performance management system. Train managers on evaluations, disciplinary actions, and other performance related matters. Address employee relations issues with a fair and consistent approach.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal labor and employment laws and regulations, staying current on legal updates and best practices.

Culture and Employee Engagement:

  • Lead communication of HR programs while fostering a positive, inclusive workplace culture aligned with the company’s mission, vision, and values. Guide strategic activities for the Wellness and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committees, research employee engagement trends, and implement initiatives to retain talent and ensure RICFB is an employer of choice.

General HR Administrative Services:

  • Partner with the Director of Communications to manage the RICFB employee SharePoint site, facilitate monthly staff meetings and approve HR-related invoices while overseeing the work of HR.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Human Resources or related field, with 7-10 years of HR experience, including 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of HR, payroll, and benefits laws and regulations, with experience in policy development and communication.
  • Proven leadership, decision-making, and supervisory skills at the director level.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Experience in employee relations, conflict management, and HRIS systems (preferably ADP Workforce Now).
