ABOUT HOME START
Since 1972, Home Start has provided immediate and comprehensive child abuse prevention and treatment services to families throughout San Diego. Today the region-wide nonprofit also addresses the conditions that contribute to risky or abusive situations – poverty, unsafe neighborhoods, lack of adequate housing, and unemployment. Home Start’s programs and services have been proven to increase the stability, self-sufficiency, parenting skills, and emotional well-being of the 20,000 families it serves each year.

OVERVIEW OF THE JOB
The CEO is an experienced and inspiring nonprofit leader with the vision, expertise, and passion for furthering the mission of Home Start. This seasoned nonprofit leader understands the complex challenges families and individuals face including mental health concerns, poverty, and housing instability, and brings innovative solutions to support healing and resilience. As an experienced fundraiser and administrator, the CEO knows how to negotiate and manage an intricate web of contracts in a way that ensures fiscal and programmatic outcomes are met to the highest standards. A proven collaborator and teambuilder, the CEO can work effectively with diverse stakeholders including senior staff, board members, leaders of allied organizations, individual donors, elected officials, public agency partners, and grantmakers. Dedicated to the cause and confident in their abilities, this leader has a deep understanding of how to lead and manage all aspects of a mission-driven nonprofit organization in a fiscally responsible and compassionate manner.
Among the CEO’s duties, this leader is responsible for:
Strategic and Collaborative Leadership
- Building a positive workplace culture by promoting equity, inclusion, professional development, and open communication among diverse staff and volunteers.
- Engaging staff and the board in transparent, supportive dialogue to drive innovation and strategic growth.
- Stewarding change through visionary and strategic planning work that builds upon the integrity and quality of the existing efforts to achieve an even greater impact.
- Communicating with public and private partners to ensure the greatest expectations of Home Start’s programs are continually met or exceeded.
- Working with existing and potential partners from the public and nonprofit sectors to identify and launch new efforts for advancing the work.
Fundraising and External Relations
- Fostering relationships with government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals to promote the work of Home Start and secure resources for its work.
- Regularly engaging elected officials and members of the public in conversations that raise awareness of the issues facing people served by Home Start and positing solutions for addressing them.
- Raising the visibility of Home Start through networking, public speaking, promotional activities, and integrated media that inspires engagement.
- Actively recruiting board members and volunteers to engage in the work.
Management
- Operating with integrity, transparency, and accountability at all times with internal stakeholders and external partners.
- Partnering with the Executive team to ensure financial and operational effectiveness.
- Providing ongoing strategic recommendations to the board based on new programmatic and funding opportunities, trends in the field, staff input/expertise, creativity, financial analysis, and risk assessment.
- Working closely with the board to ensure that programmatic, fiduciary, and legal compliance responsibilities are fulfilled transparently and responsibly.
- Ensuring adherence to Home Start’s values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all organizational activities
QUALIFICATIONS
- Passion for the mission and an understanding of the issues affecting underserved families and children struggling with child abuse and neglect, poverty, and related issues.
- The proven ability to strategically and operationally manage government contracts to meet fiscal and programmatic outcomes.
- A proven track record of generating revenue from private foundations, corporations, and individuals.
- The ability to inspire others to engage with the organization and its mission.
- Proven executive-level experience leading and inspiring diverse teams, communicating, negotiating, and collaborating with a variety of external partners.
- Significant experience supervising, coaching, supporting, and mentoring a diverse senior staff team.
- Extensive knowledge of nonprofit management, including financial and programmatic oversight.
- Experience in mental health is a strong plus.
- Knowledge of key stakeholders San Diego and California’s nonprofit and public sectors is a plus.
Salary package: $200,000–$230,000. Home Start offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 100% employer-paid medical premiums, retirement savings options, and professional development opportunities.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $200,000.00 - $230,000.00 per year
