Research Program Coordinator

Job Description

We are seeking a Research Program Coordinator who will play a vital role in managing and coordinating clinical research studies led by Dr. Sezen Karakus. This role primarily focuses on research coordination but also requires strong ophthalmic technician skills to support both research and clinical operations. The coordinator will ensure the smooth running of clinical research studies, foster communication within the research team, and perform clinical exams and testing as a skilled ophthalmic technician. Additionally, the coordinator will serve as the primary ophthalmic technician during clinic sessions held by Dr. Karakus at Wilmer Greenspring, 2 days a week. The position requires onsite work for 3-4 days per week, with the possibility of remote work for administrative tasks 1-2 days per week.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of clinical research studies.
  • Prepare and submit IRB submissions, amendments, and renewals.
  • Schedule study visits and ensure proper coordination of study-related activities.
  • Oversee the preparation of study materials, forms, and supply orders.
  • Ensure all required registrations, certifications, and study-related procedures are completed.
  • Coordinate the transport of study samples and organize study-related documents, files, and data submissions.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with research team members and organize regular team meetings.
  • Assign and follow up on tasks assigned to team members.
  • Act as a skilled ophthalmic technician for research-related exams such as corneal confocal microscopy (training provided).
  • Perform ophthalmic measurements like vision and intraocular pressure, as required for clinical studies.
  • Assist in the clinic 2-3 days a week, preparing patients for exams, performing required testing, and ensuring clinic flow.
  • Prepare surgery patient charts and supervise clinic schedules to ensure smooth operation.
  • Assist with clinic and research supply orders and other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Assist with the patient related issues, including addressing medical concerns, medication or appointment related issues.
  • 1-2 days of remote work possible for administrative duties.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.

  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in research coordination, IRB submissions, and clinical research studies (training will be provided).
  • Prior experience in ophthalmic research or clinical studies.
  • Knowledge of regulatory processes and procedures in research, particularly in ophthalmology.

Starting Salary Range: $17.20 - $30.30 HRLT (Commensurate with experience) 
Employee group: Full Time 
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
