Summary

For decades, Community Education and Recreation (“Rec & Ed”) has provided a wide variety of enriching and recreational sports opportunities to youth and adults in the Ann Arbor area. Rec & Ed is committed to being the place “Where Community Comes Together” in ways that support well-being and personal growth.

Rec & Ed is a self-funded department of the Ann Arbor Public Schools, primarily through participant fees. Rec & Ed’s budgets are developed in partnership with the school district’s Finance department; the budget of approximately $6,000,000 is managed throughout the year by a Rec & Ed administrator.

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director, lead financial operations for the Rec & Ed department, including budget planning and reporting and ensuring compliance on district financial procedures; assist with hiring and other personnel matters. Work collaboratively with the Director, Executive Director, and department managers to create and maintain efficient daily operations that support quality programs, a positive work culture, and outstanding customer service.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Education, Organizational Behavior, Human Resources, or related field; Master’s preferred.

● Proven experience with budget planning, monitoring, problem solving, and reporting; experience with school district and/or non-profit organization budgets preferred.

● Minimum of 3 years experience supervising staff and leading teams.

● Knowledge of Rec & Ed department, Ann Arbor Public Schools, and Ann Arbor community preferred.

● Experience problem solving and decision making in collaborative environments

Essential Duties

● Work with key Rec & Ed staff and AAPS finance department to create, monitor, problem solve, and report on Rec & Ed’s annual budget

● Assist Director with hiring and other personnel matters; ensure Rec & Ed staff follow HR rules and processes for hiring and evaluation of employees

● Provide training and support to new and continuing staff regarding district and department financial and hiring procedures and use of key software systems.

● Signing authority: review, approve and sign travel/mileage reimbursements, PAFs, and other documents

● Develop and maintain positive working relationships with district Finance, Human Resources, and other relevant district departments.

● Direct supervision of 2 staff and functional supervision of 2-4 staff

● Oversee Rec & Ed scholarship program

● Provide information and support to staff for issues related to district policies

● Respond to urgent situations when Director is not available

● Assist in the oversight of supervising front line customer service staff and Facilities/Rental program as requested by the Director

● Triage customer complaints and proposals to appropriate staff; respond to customers on behalf of the Director as needed.

● Maintain continuous communication with the Director, informed of all critical issues

● Participate on Management Committee to help set Rec & Ed strategy, policy and procedures

● Participate on the Marketing Committee to assist in providing admin level needs

● Assist with department software programs and trainings as requested

● Represent Rec & Ed administration at Recreation Advisory Commission as needed

● As requested, work in a collaborative manner with Rec & Ed managers and staff to solve problems and support division operations

● Complete short-term data projects as needed

● Actively contribute to positive work environment and culture

● Fulfill other duties as assigned

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time, Contract

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
