Job Title: Executive Vice President

Summary: The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), a membership organization for New York State physicians, is seeking an Executive Vice President. The successful candidate will be dynamic and have an engaging, polished presence; team and consensus-building skills; openness and accessibility; flexibility and adaptability; an empowering style of management and a belief in transparency.

Job Objectives: Effective and efficient management of all MSSNY activities, including but not limited to areas listed below:

  • Work closely with board directors and committees to assess and address issues affecting the organization. Serve as ex-officio of each committee.
  • Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction for program strategies and efficiencies, compliance, and quality assurance.
  • Identify and address staffing requirements for efficient operations and maintain a strong work culture that attracts and retains people while driving the organization’s mission.
  • Grow MSSNY membership through successful and innovative efforts to recruit, retain and engage members.
  • Develop new or expanded sources of non-dues revenue.
  • Implement successful legislative and regulatory advocacy.
  • Oversee and promote MSSNY’s advocacy on behalf of physicians.
  • Oversee and enhance physician and patient education programs, including continuing medical education (CME).
  • Ensure MSSNY meetings (both in-person and virtual) have the support and resources necessary to fulfill their objectives.
  • Oversee implementation of strategic plan.
  • Make certain that volunteer physician leadership is informed and consulted on appropriate matters and that staff follow the strategic direction of physician leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage MSSNY staff including but not limited to hiring, promoting, evaluating, disciplining and terminating.
  • Manage MSSNY’s finances, including but not limited to preparation of annual budget. Ensure spending is within budgeted amounts. Make spending adjustments based on forecasted projections and oversee the preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Grow MSSNY membership through successful efforts to recruit, engage and retain members, whether as individuals or in groups. Such efforts may include enhancing MSSNY’s value proposition for members and effectively communicating that value to current and potential members.
  • Develop new or expanded sources of non-dues revenue. Actively engage and energize MSSNY volunteers, board members, event committees, partnering organizations, and funders.
  • Implement successful legislative and regulatory advocacy, which includes: working with volunteer physician leadership to develop the legislative agenda and key priorities; preparing materials to support the agenda; conducting outreach regarding the agenda to other groups including specialty and county societies, as well as other allies (potentially including hospitals, nurses, physician assistants, businesses and consumers); using effective grassroots action to persuade legislators or regulators of the merit of our issues.
  • Actively work with MSSNY leaders and membership to expand the effectiveness of MSSNY’s political action committee (PAC), while ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal election laws.
  • Execute and expand MSSNY’s advocacy on behalf of physicians, including the effective use of our Physician Payment and Practice program to ensure successful advocacy efforts on behalf of physicians to support fair compensation from health insurers.
  • Oversee and enhance physician and patient education programs, including continuing medical education (CME).
  • Ensure MSSNY meetings, including the annual House of Delegates, AMA, Board of Trustees, Council and Office of the President, have the support and resources necessary to fulfill their objectives.
  • Ensure staff support for MSSNY committees, including but not limited to assisting the President on committee appointments, and committee chairs on the meetings and work of the committees.
  • Develop and implement strategic planning, including accountability; making sure that physician leaders stay focused on the approved larger institutional objectives.
  • Make certain that physician leadership is informed and consulted on appropriate matters and that staff are following the strategic direction of physician leadership.
  • Maintain and improve relationships with the County Medical Societies.
  • Plan, formulate and recommend for the approval of the Board of Trustees and Council policies that will further the objectives of the Medical Society.
  • Execute decisions of the House of Delegates, Board of Trustees and Council.
  • Execute contracts, grants and similar commitments as authorized by the Board of Trustees.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state and federal requirements regarding MSSNY.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree preferred;
  • Minimum 10 years of senior association management experience – previous work with professional member associations preferred;
  • Substantial success in managing all tasks associated with the management of a non-profit membership organization, including marketing, membership recruitment and retention and volunteer management;
  • Demonstrated experience as a strategic thinker and planner;
  • Action oriented.
  • Experience working in or with the public sector;
  • Experience in government relations/lobbying;
  • Effective communicator;
  • Competent administrator;
  • Active listening skills;
  • Calm and respectful demeanor;
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills;
  • Hands-on leadership;
  • Conscientious manager and leader able to lead and motivate staff and members by example;
  • Able to comprehend and drill down into the detail of an issue when necessary;
  • Creates considerate and constructive relationships with colleagues;
  • A mentor to Senior Staff;
  • Knowledge of healthcare issues.

Pay: $300,000.00 - $325,000.00 per year
